• WHY LIFE INSURANCE?

     

     

    • Most people know that having auto insurance or home owner's insurance are critical for peace of mind in the event of an accident or other disaster, but having life insurance is typically not top of mind. It's not that people are not concerned about the enormous financial burden on our loved ones if we pass away, but it's difficult to think about it the same as occurrences that happens all too often, such as with an auto accident or a house fire. The reality is that if you do pass away unexpectedly, the financial impact on your family could be devastating.
    • Some get free group life insurance at work, which can give people the false sense of security because they have no intention of leaving their current company. This does not take into account changes in the marketplace, companies going into bankruptcy, needing to let employees go or just being unhappy at your workplace. In many cases, a person cannot take group insurance with them when they leave a company and if they can, it is priced at their current age and may be subject to medical review. If you are getting nearer to retirement age or if you have medical conditions such diabetes or heart disease, permanent life insurance often becomes prohibitively expensive.
    • We talk below about short term and permanent life (for ever) insurance that offer protection and/or accumulation of tax advantaged asset value and potentially tax free income.
    • As with annuities, life insurance is a protected asset. In Florida, cash value life insurance is unconditionally exempt from seizure by creditors or bankruptcy court.

  • TERM, PERMANENT, WHOLE LIFE & FIXED INDEX UNIVERSAL LIFE (FIUL) INSURANCE

    TERM & PERMANENT LIFE BASICS

    Term Insurance is for a period of time:

    • Like medical insurance, you don’t recover money spent on premiums.

    Permanent Insurance is for ever:

    • Tax deferred and Tax advantaged.
    • Whole Life, Universal Life (including Fixed Indexed) and Variable Life

    WHOLE LIFE

    • Whole life policies have guaranteed premiums, guaranteed cash values and guaranteed death benefits.
    • Premiums are fixed and higher than for indexed products and are designed to be more than adequate to cover insurance company costs, while providing guaranteed coverage for life. Building cash value is a secondary objective and the built in growth tends to be low.
    • Participating whole life policies offer dividends and non-participating policies do not.
    • Dividends may include non-guaranteed dividends.
    • Dividends are not taxable. Dividends are offered to Policy holders when the insurance companies investment returns are better or cost less for these policies.
    • I do not offer it as a first option as it is an older product, and many better performing and lower premium options are now available (FIUL). If you request Whole Life insurance, I will be happy to quote you from the best performing carriers in the industry. I can show which Carriers have given the best dividends over the past 10 years and know which have the largest market share.

    UNIVERSAL LIFE & FIXED INDEX UNIVERSAL LIFE

    • In Universal LIfe, premiums and death benefits can be changed by the owner –high risk making the policy potentially non viable.
    • FIUL is a specialized form of Universal Life, which is less flexible,with built in guard rails, is a lower cost than whole life, has higher potential gains and is tied to a mathematical index for gain. The index is guaranteed to never go negative, even if the market crashes:
    • As a Permanent insurance product, it is tax advantaged; cash withdrawn as a loan is not taxable and beneficiaries are typically not taxed. One could design the loans to provide supplemental retirement income for many years, such as 20 to 30 years. The accumulated funds could be used for Long Term Care (LTC) with the LTC Rider included. It is also a good alternative to 529 plans.

    VARIABLE LIFE INSURANCE

     

    • Variable Life is the riskiest form of Permanent Life Insurance.
    • Cash Value fluctuates, depending on the performance of financial markets such as
      the stock market and mutual funds.
    • It is generally accepted that costs are high and risks are similar to the stock market.
    • The upside potential is there, however, you need to be comfortable with the downside risk.
    • You could do very well or lose it all.

    HOW INDEXES WORK AND PROTECT DOWNSIDE RISK

    • Indexes are managed by major Banks, Investment Banks or Insurance Companies
    • You have control over performance by choosing which index to use at start of the contract and the end of each crediting period. All the Carriers I use, give you a choice of several indexes and even some exclusive index options.
    • The key feature of indexes is that they are designed to be less volatile than the market and they guarantee no loss if the market crashes
    • There are many facets to understanding how Indexes work. I will be happy to explain the details, in person.
